Kirsty MacColl

Singer/songwriter Kirsty Anna MacColl was born on October 10, 1959 in Croydon, South London, England. She was the daughter of famed folk singer Ewan MacColl and dancer Jean Newlove. She and her brother, Hamish, grew up in Croydon, where she attended Park Hill Primary School and Monks Hill High School , making appearances in school plays. At the time of MacColl's birth, her father had been in a relationship with folk singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Peggy Seeger since 1956 (a relationship that would continue until his death in 1989) and already had a son with her. She came to notice when Chiswick Records released an EP by local punk band Drug Addix with MacColl doing backing vocals under the pseudonym Mandy Doubt in 1978. Stiff Records executives were not impressed with the band but liked her and subsequently signed her to a record deal. Her debut single, They Don't Know (yes, that song comedienne and briefly pop star Tracey Ullman got an enormous hit with), released in 1979, peaked at #3 in terms of airplay. However, a distributor's strike prevented copies of the single getting into shops, and the single consequently failed to appear in the official UK single charts, which were strictly based on record sales only. Kirsty released the follow-up single, You Caught Me Out in the same year, but felt she lacked Stiff's full backing, and left the label shortly before the song was to be released. The single was pulled, and only a few white label promo copies of the single are known to exist. MacColl then moved to Polydor Records in 1981. This change of labels signified a huge step in her career as she later got her first hit, There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis, which peaked at #14 in the U.K. charts. This was taken from her critically acclaimed debut album, Desperate Character. In 1983, Polydor dropped her just as she had completed recording the songs for a planned second album (to be called Real) which used more synthesizers and had a more New Wave sound to it. She returned to Stiff Records, where pop singles such as Terry and He's on the Beach were unsuccessful but a cover of Billy Bragg's A New England in 1985 got her her first Top 10 in her career. This included two extra verses were especially written for her by Bragg. Also around this time, MacColl wrote and performed the theme song for London Girls for Channel 4's short-lived sitcom Dream Stuffing (1984). Around this time she got married to famed producer Steve Lillywhite and since she didn't have a record deal at the moment and no one wanted to buy her contract (due to Stiff Records going bankrupt in 1986), she dedicated her time to do backing vocals for the artists that her husband produced for, such as Frida (from ABBA), The Smiths, Talking Heads, Big Country, among others. She also appeared in the videos Welcome to the Cheap Seats by The Wonder Stuff and (Nothing But) Flowers by Talking Heads. In 1985, she became a mom of eldest son Jamie and in 1987, she became a mom once again to son Louis. In 1987 also she re-emerged in the British charts just in time for Christmas season, with her duet with The Pogues, Fairytale of New York. This led her to accompanying The Pogues on their British and European tour in 1988, an experience which she said helped her temporarily to overcome her stage fright. In December 2007, after being rereleased several times, Fairytale of New York created controversy because of the usage of the word faggot, "to avoid offense". Many people, including Kirsty's mother criticized this decision and the song was broadcast on the radio airwaves with the word faggot. It was cleared that in Ireland, faggot has a totally different connotation than the one in the rest of the world. Faggot means someone that is lazy. Needless to say, the popularity of this song made it into a staple for Christmas songs and it was voted as favorite Christmas song by VH-1 in 2004, 2005, and 2006. In March 1989, MacColl sang backing vocals on the Happy Mondays' Hallelujah EP. After the contract issues was resolved, MacColl returned to recording as a solo artist and released her critically acclaimed album, Kite. The album was widely praised by critics, and included collaborations with David Gilmour and Johnny Marr. MacColl's lyrics addressed life in Margaret Thatcher's Britain on Free World, ridiculed the vapidity of fame in Fifteen Minutes, and addressed the vagaries of love in Don't Come the Cowboy with Me, Sonny Jim! Although Kite contained many original compositions, MacColl's biggest chart success came with her cover of The Kinks' Days, which gave her a Top 20 hit in the U.K. During this time, MacColl appeared in the highly popular sketch comedy show French & Saunders, appearing as herself singing songs like Fifteen Minutes and Girls on Bikes (a reworking on the B-side Am I Right?), and with comedy duo Raw Sex, the Frank and Nancy Sinatra's hit Something Stupid. In 1991, she released her third studio album, Electric Landlady, which included her most successful chart hit in North America, Walking Down Madison. Despite the song's U.S. chart success, the album wasn't a hit for Virgin Records, and in 1992, when Virgin was sold to EMI, MacColl was dropped from the label. In 1993, she released her follow-up album, Titanic Days, released and written on the wake of her divorce from Steve Lillywhite. However, her record company this time around ZTT Records had agreed to only release the album as a one-off and that she wasn't gonna have a record deal. In 1995, she released two new singles on Virgin, Caroline and her cover of Lou Reed's Perfect Day, which she duetted with Evan Dando. In this year, her compilation Galore was also released. Galore became her only album to make it into the Top 10 in the U.K. MacColl would not record again for several years; her frustration with the music business was exacerbated by a case of writer's block. MacColl herself admitted that she was ready to give up the music world and become an English teacher in South America. After several trips to Cuba and Brazil, MacColl recorded the world-music inspired album (particularly Cuban and other forms of Latin American music), Tropical Brainstorm, which was released in 2000 to critical acclaim. It included the song In These Shoes? , which got airplay in the U.S. and was covered by Bette Midler and featured in the HBO Show, Sex and the City. It would be later adopted by Catherine Tate as the theme tune for her BBC TV show and feature on the soundtrack to British film Kinky Boots. MacColl was very known, musically speaking, for her lyrics which were at turns, humorous, biting, and achingly sad. This sometimes presented a challenge to the commercial viability of her work. She developed a severe case of stage fright, which first struck on her early tours and she never overcame it. She was also devoted to her children, and would spend long periods of time away from the spotlight in order to focus on raising them.
In 2000, following her presentation of a radio program she had done for the BBC in Cuba, she took well-deserved vacations with her kids and her partner, musician James Knight. On December 18, 2000, she and her sons went diving in Cozumel, Mexico, as she intended to teach them and transmit her love for diving to her kids. She took them to an area restricted to diving and no watercraft could trespass that zone. With the group was the local divemaster, Iván Díaz. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a speeding powerboat entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did: Louis was not in the boat's path, but Jamie was; Kirsty pushed Jamie out of the way (he only got sustained minor head and rib injuries) but in doing so, she was hit by the boat and killed instantly. MacColl's remains were repatriated to the United Kingdom and the subsequent funeral took place at Mortlake Crematorium in London. The boat involved in the accident was owned by Mexican supermarket millionaire Guillermo González Nova, who was on board with several members of his family. An employee of González Nova's, José Cen Yam, claimed to have been driving the boat at the time the accident occurred. Several published reports and eyewitnesses have stated Cen Yam was NOT the one controlling the boat; eyewitnesses also indicate that the boat was travelling much faster than the speed that Cen Yam had claimed. Cen Yam was found guilty of culpable homicide and was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison. However, he was allowed under Mexican law to pay a punitive fine of 1034 pesos (about $90) in lieu of the prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay approximately $2150 in restitution to MacColl's family. Published reports have included statements from people who spoke to Cen Yam after the accident, claiming Cen Yam had received money for taking the blame for the accident. González Nova family members claimed that divemaster Iván Díaz failed to put out a warning that it was an area exclusive for diving and there is confusion as to whether he pull out the correct flag on his boat. After the accident, MacColl's family created a campaign in response to the events surrounding her death. The lawyers representing the family have stayed in contact with the Mexican government and made an application to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Also, it was found that there was lack of cooperation from the Mexican authorities. In May 2006, Emilio Cortés Ramírez, a federal prosecutor in Cozumel, was found liable for breach of authority in conjunction with his handling of the MacColl case. Also, the BBC featured a documentary entitled Who Killed Kirsty MacColl?; also, U2 and Bono, a friend of Kirsty's, spoke about the incident during a concert in Monterrey, Mexico in February 2006. The Mexican government released a statement after the concert indicating that they would take action. However no additional details were immediately forthcoming. In December 2009, it was announced that the Justice For Kirsty campaign was being wound up since "the committee was successful in achieving most of its aims" and "it is unlikely that any more could be achieved." The campaign's remaining funds will be divided between two charities "of which Kirsty would have approved", Casa Alianza Mexico and Cuba Music Solidarity. A few traditions that still remain up to this day due to Kirsty's unfortunate and untimely death are that Billy Bragg whenever he performs at concerts and he performs A New England, he includes the two extra verses she performed. Kirsty was honored in 2002 with a memorial concert in London at the Royal Albert Music Hall, featuring a number of musicians that had worked with her or been influenced by her. Another tradition is that in 2001 a bench was placed by the southern entrance to London's Soho Square (which is the title of one of Kirsty's songs) as a memorial to her. Every year on the Sunday nearest to Kirsty's birthday, fans all around the world gather at the bench and pay tribute to her and sing her songs. A redhead angel, a singer/songwriter who was able to write with sarcasm, humor, sadness and happiness all in one, a singer/songwriter who was among the first --if not-- the first British artist to incorporate Latin music into her songs, a mother, a human being who encountered with death at a young age and in a very unfair and tragic way, an artist who shook off the pop star label and didn't want to be commercial, an artist who knew what artistic integrity was, a gutsy female artist (as British pop diva Kim Wilde once pointed), in short words, a beautiful human being, that's what Kirsty MacColl is in a few phrases and on a side note, on behalf of the owners of this blog and Kirsty's fans, we want to say that even though Kirsty's not in the flesh anymore in this planet, she still remains in our hearts and her music still is and will always be listened to and cherished and her legacy will never be denied.

Desperate Character (1981)

Desperate Character is Kirsty MacColl's debut album, released in July 1981 through Polydor Records. The music of this album is mainly retro rock & roll, though Mexican Sofa has a bit of a Latin sound, a la Mexicana to it. Kirsty even flirts with country music, with the country version of There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. The original release contains 12 tracks but her 1985 re-release (renamed Kirsty MacColl) includes 14 tracks and 3 tracks that appeared in the original release were left out. Electric Landlady (1991)

Electric Landlady is Kirsty's third studio album, released on June 25, 1991. It was her second Virgin Records release and second collaboration with producer/husband Steve Lillywhite. The title was given when MacColl found it to be the name that was accidentally written on some early pressings of Jimi Hendrix's album Electric Ladyland. This album was her most successful U.S. release, owing to the lead track Walking Down Madison, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. This song also features guest vocals by rapper Aniff Cousins. Also, MacColl flirts with Latin music, with her song My Affair. Kirsty is considered by many people as one of the very first, if not the first, British artists to incorporate Latin music fully into her music. Kirsty even sings some lines in Spanish in this song. The singles spawned from this album were: Walking Down Madison (#23 U.K.), My Affair (#56 U.K.), and All I Ever Wanted. This album was reissued in 2005 with bonus tracks. As in the same case of her two previous studio albums, Titanic Days was remastered in 2005, but in a 2 CD set. The second CD includes non-album tracks, including live versions. The song Angel was the only single released from this album. Even though Soho Square was never released as a single, this song is among Kirsty's most popular songs, especially because of Kirsty's bench that is in the Soho Square, which serves as a memorial and pilgrimage place for Kirsty. The album charted at #46 in the U.K. album charts. Kirsty played guitar and keyboards in this album.

Tropical Brainstorm (2000)

Tropical Brainstorm was Kirsty's fifth and last studio album. It was released on March 20, 2000. After the failure of her last singles, Caroline and Perfect Day, and her disappointment with the music business and after overcoming a period of severe writer's block, Kirsty contemplated the idea of quiting the music business and becoming an English teacher in South America. During these trips to South America and Cuba, Kirsty found renewed inspiration and wrote new material but this time around basing it around world music, especifically Latin American music. This was not the occasional track from an album with Latin sound. This time it was an album fully made up of that Latin American sound. Many tracks include either Spanish or Portuguese lyrics. The album was released with 3 extra tracks in the U.S. and with two further bonus tracks plus a video for Mambo de la Luna, when it was rereleased in 2005. The album received a lot of critical acclaim. The singles spawned from this album were Mambo de la Luna (#114 U.K.) and In These Shoes? Sabrina (Salerno)

Norma Sabrina Salerno was born on March 15, 1968 in Genoa, Italy. When she was in her teenage years, she won a beauty contest in her native region of Liguria. As a result she became a model and in 1985 she made her television debut in the Italian prime time show Premiatissima on Canale 5. The following year, she saw her first single being released, Sexy Girl. Produced by Claudio Cecchetto, it became a Top 20 hit in her native Italy as well as in Germany. In 1987, she released her first studio album, Sabrina. In addition to Sexy Girl, this album included her international top 5 hit Boys (Summertime Love), which has sold more than 1,5 million copies worldwide. Part of the success of this single was her classic video where she appears in a very tight bikini and as she kept dancing, the bikini top kept falling down and eventually revealed her nipples. This video caused lots of controversy because of Sabrina's errr…………………possessions. In 1988, she won the Best European Singer Award during the Festivalbar event and enjoyed another European-wide summer hit, the Stock Aitken & Waterman-produced All of Me (Boy Oh Boy). Later in that year, she released her second studio album, Super Sabrina, which included All of Me and her other big hits the Giorgio Moroder produced- Like a Yo Yo and My Chico. The latter was accompanied by another controversial video. She later found herself established as a true European sex symbol. During this time the press created a rivalry between her and Samantha Fox, as the two European voluptuous and raunchy singers who performed sexy music. Also, in 1988, she started a relationship with Enrico Monti. Thanks to her sexy image and success of her albums, she was soon invited to perform at prestigious festivals such as Montreux Pop Festival and in 1989 she appeared at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, where 50,000 people gathered over three days to enjoy Sabrina's music. Also in 1989 Sabrina released a remix album Super Sabrina Remix and a new single, Gringo, which eventually became a hit. In 1990, she hosted a TV show Ricomincio da 2 along with Raffaella Carrà on Rai Due and appeared on the popular music show Festivalbar with a new song called Yeah Yeah. 1991 marked a turning point for Sabrina in terms of her music career. She performed a duet with Italian singer Jo Squillo called Siamo Donne ("We Are Women"), her first release in her native language. They performed together at 1991's Sanremo Music Festival to much acclaim. Sabrina's third studio album, Over the Pop was released in this same year and for the first time she was allowed to co-write and produce some of the songs. This was a reflection of Sabrina's desire to mature as an artist and distance herself from her already famous sexy image. This created conflicts with her management. As a result the promotion for this album was interrupted and just one more single was released, Shadows of the Night. Later, Sabrina parted ways with her record company and with her record company and her career was in hiatus for 4 years. However, in 1992, she released her second non-album single called Cover Model. In 1995, she was able to come back to showbiz and she soon started hosting Italian TV shows and releasing two new singles via an independent label, "Rockawillie" and "Angel Boy", which were minor hits in Italy and Scandinavia. The following year she established her own recording studio in Treviso along with her boyfriend, Enrico Monti. The first fruits of the seeds she sowed was her first album in Italian language, Maschio Dove Sei. This album was a more mature rock/pop influence to Sabrina's music. The album and its two singles, "Fatta e Rifatta" ("Done and Redone") and the title track Maschio Dove Sei (Male, Where Are You?), were surprisingly critically acclaimed yet the album was considered a commercial flop due to lack of promotion and distribution. Supposedly disillusioned by the flop of her album, she focused in other projects. The year 1996 saw her theater debut with the comedy I Cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda ("The Knights of the Round Table") playing the role of Morgan le Fey, and after a two year stint she then hosted the game show Il Mercante in Fiera ("The Merchant at the Fair"). In 1998 after the success of her stage debut, Sabrina was cast in a new comedy called Uomini sull'orlo di una crisi di nervi ("Men on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown"), which was also very successful, but during the production she broke a knee and was unable to continue. She had recovered by the summer and could host the TV show Cocco di mamma ("Mamma's Boy") on Rai Uno. In this show she had the chance to sing some Italian and International summer hits of the past. This led her to reconsider a music comeback. That same year she was cast in the Italian music band 883's debut movie Jolly Blu and of the sitcom Tutti gli uomini sono uguali ("All men are the same") airing on Italia 1. In 1999, she released a new studio album, A Flower's Broken, in Italy and Spain. Although there was some curiosity at the beginning because of the single I Love You, the album was unsuccessful. She was a guest on the British TV show Eurotrash where she performed her new single I Love You. Unfortunately, the album's music label RTI Music was being sold (at the same time of the album's release) and all marketing and promotion was stopped.
The year 2001 saw Sabrina's comeback to theatre with the musical Emozioni ("Emotions") that received very good reviews from critics; with this show she toured Italy for almost 3 years. In 2002, Sabrina hosted another TV show on Italia 1 called Matricole & Meteore ("Freshmen and Meteors"), in which she travelled the world to uncover the recent situations of former stars such as Shannen Doherty, Gary Coleman, Jimmy Sommerville, and others. In 2004, she married her longtime partner Enrico Monti and had her first child, Luca Maria. In 2005, Sabrina starred in the independent film Colori that premiered at the Salerno's Independent Cinema Festival, where she won the Critics' Choice Award as best actress. Sabrina also took part in ITV's Hit Me Baby One More Time where she sang the songs "Boys" and The Sugababe's Hole in the Head. In November of that same year, she performed the songs "Boys" and "All of Me" in the Russian concert Diskoteka 80-x. In 2006, Sabrina released (but only through her own website) a new song called I Feel Love (Good Sensation). Sabrina continued touring and on August 24, 2008, Sabrina performed in Poland in a concert of the stars of the 80's along with Kim Wilde, Samantha Fox, Sandra, Modern Talking, Limahl, and Shakin' Stevens. This concert was a part of the Sopot Festival 2008 presented live on Polish channel TVN. Nowadays, Sabrina is a record producer; she owns a recording studio which was used by Sade, Simply Red, Vasco Rossi, and many others. She also runs a management agency, called New Boys Productions, and she manages some song and dance acts. On October 3, 2008, Sabrina published her first official greatest hits album called Erase/Rewind. It includes new versions of her hits, as well as several new recorded tracks and cover versions. On September 28, 2009, a newly remixed version of Erase Rewind was released. It features 7 remixed versions and also includes the video clip shot in the previous year. On June 1, 2010, Sabrina's and Samantha Fox's video for their take on Blondie's classic hit, Call Me was premiered in Youtube. The single will get to radio stations on June 4, 2010. A model, a sex symbol, a woman with huge natural………possessions, an actress, a singer, a TV hostess, a mother and wife is in short words the story of one of Italy's most popular and much talked about artists.

Sabrina (1987)

Sabrina's first studio album Sabrina was released in late 1987. This includes her signature hit Boys (Summertime Love), Sexy Girl, Hot Girl and some cover versions like Rod Stewart's Da Ya Think I'm Sexy and The Knacks' My Sharona and LaBelle's Lady Marmalade. The singles spawned from this album were: Sexy Girl (which was released in 1986, #20 Italy), Lady Marmalade (#41 France), Boys (Summertime Love) (#1 Italy, #3 UK and top 5 pretty much everywhere) and Hot Girl (#21 Italy, #2 Spain). Many people say that Hot Girl became such a big hit in Spain because Sabrina performed this song in a TV show and her breasts came off from the halter top she was wearing due to the fact that she was dancing very enthusiastically. This album charted at #4 in Finland, #24 in France and #11 in Switzerland.

Over the Pop (1991)

Sabrina's third studio album, Over the Pop was released in 1991. By this time, Sabrina had a strong desire to grow as an artist and stop relying heavily on her sexy image. This led to conflicts with her management and her record label and the promotion for this album was eventually halted and only two singles were released: Yeah Yeah (#24 Italy) and Shadows of the Night. This album also includes her duet with Italian singer Jo Squillo, Siamo Donne (#11 Italy) and a cover of The Carpenters' Yesterday Once More. It is important to mention that this is Sabrina's first album in which she contributed with co-writing and even co-producing some of the songs. Maschio Dove Sei (1995)

Maschio Dove Sei is Sabrina Salerno's fourth studio album and her first using her full name and her first to be performed in her native tongue. It was released in 1995. She started recording Italian songs in 1995 that had an Italo rock style sound instead of her signature dance style. Even some tracks she had recorded in English in 1994 were rerecorded in this new style, like the track "Maybe Your Love" which became "Gioco Perverso". The result was the album Maschio Dove Sei, which was released by the Italian NAR label, in late 1995. The album was later licensed to Barsa Promociones in Spain, who released it with a slightly different picture sleeve and a different print on the CD. The album was surprisingly critically acclaimed though it was a commercial flop due to lack of promotion and distribution. Only two singles were released: Maschio Dove Sei and Fatta e Rifatta. This album includes an Italian version of Kim Wilde's song Stay Awhile, Alice Rivivrà. Maschio Dove Sei was rereleased in 1997 under the title Numeri, which included a bonus track which was the title track, Numeri.

A Flower's Broken (1999)

A Flower's Broken is Sabrina's fifth and so far last studio album, released in January 1999. It was produced by Enrico Monti and Sabrina herself and was finally released in Italy and Spain by the RTI-Music label. Style-wise, the album saw Sabrina's return to electronic dance-pop, the type of music she has been known and loved for before she discarded this style for 1995's Maschio Dove Sei album. Only one single was released from this album - "I Love You". Unfortunately, both the album and the single were unsuccessful and the album's music label RTI Music (controlled by Mediaset) was being sold at the same time of the album's release, and all marketing and promotion was stopped. The only single taken from this album was I Love You.

Tracklist:

1-) Shallala.
2-) Jimmy.
3-) I Love You.
4-) Diamond in the Sand.
5-) I Want You.

Call Me (Mini album) (2010)

Call Me is a mini album released in June 15, 2010. Since late 2009 there were strong rumors that the two queens of voluptuous pop, Samantha Fox (!) and Sabrina Salerno (!) were gonna record a duet together. You've heard it!! Their final collaboration was a rerecording of Blondie's hugely successful 1980 hit, Call Me. Both women self-produced the record and there are 3 versions of this mini album. One, the 10 track (plus the video) version, which is the one that will be uploaded here. This version even includes solo versions of Call Me from each of the ladies, a remix of Sabrina's classic Italo disco hit, Gringo, among other tracks. Another version is the picture disc version which consists of 4 tracks only and another version is the 8-track version which is made up of only remixes of Call Me. It certainly is everything worth to watch, listen, and form part of the experience of the biggest news of the year in the 80's revival department. The duet of the two queens of voluptuous pop. Don't miss this!!!

Shakespears Sister

Shakespears Sister is a synth pop rock band formed in 1988 by former Bananarama singer/songwriter Irish-born Siobhan Fahey (born as Siobhan Máire Deirdre Fahey on September 10, 1958 in Dunshaughlin, Ireland) and former member of Eric Clapton's band the American Marcella Detroit (born as Marcella Levy on June 21, 1959 in Detroit, Michigan). Marcella even wrote Lay Down Sally for Eric Clapton, when she was only 17. After Fahey left Bananarama in early 1988, she decided to create a new musical vehicle for herself, as a solo artist. This came in the shape of Shakespears Sister (accidentally misspelled due to one of Fahey's friends carving a wooden cut logo of the band's name and dropping the "e" in Shakespear and with no apostrophe), named after The Smiths' hit of the same name, in which in turn was named after an essay written by famed British feminist writer Virginia Woolf. In October of 1988, Fahey released her first Shakespears Sister single the double A-sided Break My Heart/Heroine. The single made it to #64 in the U.K. charts and was considered a flop and London Records opted for hiring someone who had been around in the music business and that was when Detroit entered in the scene. However, Marcella herself has said in the past that she actually came to be part of Shakespears Sister when Siobhan Fahey moved to Los Angeles with her family after leaving Bananarama and she started writing songs with Richard Feldman, who was Detroit's boyfriend at the time. Fahey and Detroit met and found out that they shared common ground in what they wanted to do musically speaking. Fahey at first told Marcella that she was gonna be the one to be in charge of the creative aspects of the band, which Marcella accepted. Detroit originally was hired as backing vocalist and occasional guitar and harmonica player. In 1989, Shakespears Sister released their smash hit You're History which made it to #7 in the U.K. charts. Their first album Sacred Heart was subsequently released. In 1991, both Fahey and Detroit became pregnant and started to write material for what was gonna be their follow up album. Since they felt connected with each other due to the fact that they were both future mothers (unfortunately, including one abortion from Marcella's part) they decided to name the album Hormonally Yours (Marcella's idea). Another idea the band had in mind to further promote the album was to shoot a 3-D film movie about a catwoman in space, as a tribute to one old B movie that was named Catwomen in the Moon. However, their record company, London Records, rejected the idea justifying that a 3-D film would be too expensive and that they were a record company and not a film company. The aborted 3-D film was gonna include 3 songs: Stay, Catwoman, and Moonchild. Hormonally Yours was finally released in early 1992, and spawned many of their best known, including their mega smash hit, the ballad with lead vocals from Marcella, Stay, accompanied by a surreal video set in outer space, featuring Siobhan portraying the evil angel of death. This video, like all their other ones were directed by highly respected video director, Sophie Muller (No Doubt, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Shakira, among others). Further singles like I Don't Care and Hello (Turn Your Radio On) further cemented their popularity. Nevertheless, 1992 saw many problems within the band. Marcella demanded a 50/50 recognition for her contributions to the band, suddenly changing the firstly established rules of the game about her being just a backing vocalist and Siobhan being the leader and creative force of the band. Siobhan turned Marcella's demands down and as a result Marcella hired a manager for herself behind Siobhan's back. This caused rifts between the two girls to the point that they barely talked to each other during this period. Siobhan developed some habit of drug use, problems in her back, and started developing a severe case of depression, by alienating herself from attending award events and interviews and adding to the fact Marcella's abandonment of the band in early 1993, Siobhan admitted herself into a psychiatric unit. Siobhan and Marcella reportedly have not spoken to each other at all ever since Marcella left the band. Up to this day, Fahey drops her name in interviews and refuses to talk about her or know about her. She had her demons sorted out and as a result Siobhan recorded another album under the name of Shakespears Sister but with Siobhan as its only member. She released a single I Can Drive in 1996, which made it to #30 in the U.K. charts. The single sounded more rockish than ever and a bit indie, which London Records opposed and aborted the album explaining that the type of music Siobhan was doing was not suitable for a woman of 38 years old and with two kids. In this same year, her contract with London Records expired and the record company bought the rights of the album leaving Fahey's album unreleased. However, in 2004, Fahey regained the ownership of the album and released it under the name of #3, a collection of songs she wrote between 1995-1997, including the single I Can Drive. In November 2009, after a much awaited expectation of her releasing her first studio album as a solo artist, she finally released an album of new material, under the name of Shakespears Sister. This was the album Songs from the Red Room. The album includes previously released singles as Siobhan Fahey like Bitter Pill, Pulsatron, plus previously unreleased solo tracks and remixes and new versions of some of her singles. Her move of releasing a new album under the name of Shakespears Sister when she was a solo artist was hugely criticized by many people, including some of her fans. On the other hand, many fans have defended Fahey for her decision saying that Shakespears Sister has always been HER project from day one and that it was natural for Fahey to make this decision. You be the judge. Post-Shakespears Sister, Siobhan has continued recording and even DJing. She also has her own record company, SF Records. She has written songs for many artists including Kylie Minogue. Two Bananarama reunions (1998 and 2002) have happened. Marcella has continued recording, including her duet with Elton John Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing. She even appeared in one episode of the heavily popular British comedy Absolutely Fabulous, and recently participated in the celebrity reality T.V. show Popstar to Operastar. An unlikely duo, with two very distinct voices (Detroit's falsetto and soprano voice with Fahey's sinister and distinct growl), with two very different musical backgrounds, with brilliant and smart lyrics, great melodies, eye-catching videos occasionally spoofing classic movies like Sunset Boulevard and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? are just a few descriptions that are short to describe the story of a short-lived and rocky yet highly interesting chapter in music history.

Trivia:

Siobhan Fahey has said that her look for the Hormonally Yours era was based on famed silent movie star, Theda Bara.

In 1989, Shakespears Sister along with Dave Stewart played in Russia as special guests for Russian guitar player, Boris Grebenshikov.

Marcella's vocals for Goodbye Cruel World were recorded separately on the phone when she was in Los Angeles expecting her baby, Maxwell.

Siobhan Fahey's sons are Samuel and Django and both are musicians.

Siobhan Fahey thanks to the single Stay, achieved what Bananarama hasn't achieved up to this day: A #1 hit in their native country.

Before the filming of the video for Stay, Siobhan had drunk a whole bottle a vodka. That's why she looks tipsy at times.

Marcella Detroit is currently married to the brother of Bucks Fizz star Jay Aston, Lance Aston.

Sacred Heart (1989)

This is Shakespears Sister debut album released in 1989 through FFRR Records. Originally, this album served as a solo vehicle for Fahey. After meeting Marcella, Fahey asked her to form part of the band not as a full member but as a backing vocalist and co-writer. The album charted to #9 in the U.K. and received a gold disc, for sales over 100, 000 copies. This album is synth-pop with Siobhan as lead singer and frontwoman of the band and Marcella in backing vocals. Fahey mainly and Detroit wrote the songs, with others having a hand by Dave Stewart (yes, that Dave Stewart from Eurythmics), Fahey's husband at the time, under the pseudonym of Manu Guiot. Singles spawned from this album were: Break My Heart/Heroine (#64 in the U.K. charts), You're History (regarded as an attack to Fahey's former bandmates from Bananarama themselves, but Fahey has always denied this) (#7 U.K.), Run Silent, Run Deep (#54 U.K.) and Dirty Mind in 1990 in the shape of a remixed version (#71 U.K.). This album also includes a cover of Bob Marley's hit Could You Be Loved? A VHS featuring the videos for the singles of this album was accompanied to promote this album.

Hormonally Yours (1992)

Shakespear's Sister second studio album was released in early 1992. Due to the fact that both members were pregnant and their state of mind at the time, they decided to name this record Hormonally Yours, Marcella's suggestion. The album is not synth pop but it's more rock/pop, with shades of glam rock at times (Catwoman). Here, Marcella demanded 50/50 recognition, Siobhan turned it down and Marcella got her own manager for herself behind Siobhan's back. Both members barely spoke to each other during this period, hence the dark mood of this album. Siobhan was fighting with depression, drug use, and back problems at the time, as well.
About the record, Shakespears Sister conceived this project originally as a 3-D film about catwomen in the moon, which would've included 3 songs: Catwoman, Stay, and Moonchild. London Records, their record company opposed to this idea claiming that they were a record company not a film company. However, for their videos, ever since Sacred Heart, Shakespears Sister hired Sophie Muller, who directed all of their videos and for Hormonally Yours, she directed Shakespears Sister most famous, recognizable, elaborated, and even iconic videos of their career, such as in the case of Stay video, which has even made it in MTV's lists of best videos. BTW, Siobhan Fahey hates the song Stay as she has said that that song doesn't represent what Shakespears Sister is. The album spawned the following singles: Goodbye Cruel World in 1991 (#59 U.K., 1992 reissue, #32 U.K.), Stay (#1 U.K. for 8 weeks, #4 U.S.), I Don't Care (#7 U.K., #55 U.S.), Hello (Turn Your Radio On) (#14 U.K.), and My 16th Apology (#61 U.K.). A VHS compiling all of the videos shot for this album was accompanied with the album for further promotion. This album charted at #3 in the U.K. and #56 in the U.S.

Tracklist:

#3 (2004)

Shakespears Sister's third studio album was released in 2004, but the music was recorded between 1995-1997, after Marcella's departure. In 1996, Fahey released her single I Can Drive, with a new backing band and with a more rockish sound. The single made it to #30 in the U.K. charts. Since her contract with London Records was about to be expired, the record company shelved the album claiming that the music she was recording wasn't suitable for a woman her age (38). Fahey tried for years and years reclaiming her rights over the album and the record company finally relented in 2003 and in 2004 Fahey distributed this album via her official website. This album is regarded by many Shakespears Sister fans as their best material.

Songs from the Red Room (2009)

Songs from the Red Room is Shakespears Sister fourth album, released on November 16, 2009. After two cancellations of what would be her solo album and releasing some of her solo singles via downloads, Fahey decided to release this album as a collection of her solo material which hadn't appeared in any of her previous albums but under the name of Shakespears Sister, which was considered as a controversial move. Singles like Bitter Pill (which was used as a sample in the Pussycat Dolls single I Want You Back) , Pulsatron, and Bad Blood appear here, though many of these singles appear in the shape of rerecorded versions, dramatically different to the original version with the addition of more guitars. This album is electronic and indie rock-ish at times. As Fahey revealed during her appearance in U.K.'s Loose Women TV show, she named her album Songs from the Red Room because her room, the place where she wrote the songs, is painted red. Siobhan besides doing the vocals she also played the guitar and keyboards in this album.

Lady Gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga, was born on March 28, 1986 in New York City, in the Italian-American home of Joseph Germanotta and Cynthia Bissett. She started playing piano at the age of 4 and she learned it by ear. Her piano playing started as an idea from her mom to keep her busy by doing something and this something was playing the piano. When she was 13, she wrote her first piano ballad and performing at clubs when she was only 14. Since she was underage she was always accompanied by her mom. When she was 11 she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and here she was thespian for a variety of musicals she performed in, playing lead roles such as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She described her academic life in high school as "very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined" but also "a bit insecure". She explains about this time of her life that she was picked on her classmates because she was considered as a freak and as someone who was provocative and eccentric, so she later started toning down her freakiness. Based on the testimony of some of her old classmates, singing was always number 1 for Gaga, but she also showed quite a fondness for boys and was actually popular. At age 17, Germanotta gained early admission to the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She was one of around 20 candidates to be admitted to this institution. There, she studied music and improved her songwriting skills by composing essays and analytical papers focusing on topics such as art, religion, social issues, and politics. By the second semester of her sophomore year , she quit school and decided to focus in her musical career. Her father reportedly agreed to pay her rent for a year on the condition that she reenrolled if she was unsuccessful. By the time she was 19, she signed a record deal with Def Jam Recordings after CEO and Chairman L.A. Reid heard her singing down the hallway from his office. The honeymoon lasted only 3 months as she was dropped from the record company. However, through her former management she was introduced to songwriter and producer Red One. She moved into an appartment on the Lower East Side and started recording an EP with her friends of Fiona Apple-esque ballads at a studio underneath a liquor store in New Jersey, becoming a local attraction downtown in the LES club scene. She soon started taking drugs while performing burlesque shows and her father didn't understand what she was doing. Early producer Rob Fusari compared her vocal style to that of Queen's Freddie Mercury and gave her her current stage name, Lady Gaga. This came via a text message Fusari sent to Gaga as Gaga was trying to think of a stage name for herself. Throught 2007, she collaborated with performance artist Lady Starlight, who helped her create her stage costumes. The two Ladys started doing gigs at downtown club venues like the Mercury Lounge, The Bitter End, and the Rockwood Music Hall. They also appeared at the Lollapalooza Festival and the act was acclaimed by the public and here is when Gaga found her niche, musically speaking. She discovered she could combine electronic sounds with vintage glam rock of David Bowie and Queen.
Then Fusari sent songs he wrote with Gaga to his friend, producer and record executive, Vincent Herbert. Herbert was quick to sign her to his label Streamline Records, an inprint of Interscope Records. Gaga has credited Herbert as the man who discovered and that she has felt they have made pop history and will continue doing so. During this time, she was in a songwriting internship and was declared as an apprentice songwriter and this is when she started writing songs for her fellow labelmates, such as Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie, Pussycat Dolls. Also, Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she recorded her voice for one of his tracks. By 2008, she relocated herself to Los Angeles, working closely with her record company to finalize her debut album The Fame. In August of that year she finally released her very first studio album and little by little she became famous first in the United States and gradually all the rest of the world, thanks to the humongous success of her single Poker Face. When Gaga released this album, she reinvented herself as a fashion icon and sensation with really outlandish and eccentric costumes and wearing her hair generally blonde and using most of the time wigs. Her image at first became really shocking and now it works as an expectation of what comes next, what comes next. Gaga herself has described that her image is inspired by Madonna, David Bowie, Grace Jones and the pop art of Andy Warhol, whom she is a big fan of. A lot of people say that her image is reminiscent of Missing Persons's quirky frontwoman, Dale Bozzio. Her combination of euro and 80's influenced electronic pop music with glam rock influences and her extravagant sense of fashion have made her quite a sensation and a much talked about subject all around the world. Her career has been the center of many controversies such as her 2009 VMA's performance of Paparazzi, where she bleeds and even hangs herself, her video onstage showing what looked like a penis and sparked a heated debate whether she was a hermaphrodite which she admitted at first and then later admitted that it was just a publicity stunt and it was actually a plastic penis, etc. In November 2009 she released her follow up material, The Fame Monster, in which the lead-off single Bad Romance became smashingly successful and very much well received by the audience and critics and even for people who were not previously either in her music or in electropop in general. Its video holds the record of being the most viewed video in Youtube. A fierce advocate of gay rights, a highly dedicated hard worker, a pop sensation, a woman who has made pop music interesting again, a fashion icon, a talented songwriter, an equally talented vocalist, an artist who professes undying love for her fans and doing anything she can for them. That's Lady Gaga in a few words.

Red And Blue (2006) (***NEW***)

Red and Blue is Stefani Germanotta's unofficial EP, released in 2006. During this time, Stefani Germanotta before becoming Lady Gaga, formed a band called Stefani Germanotta Band (SGB), with fellow members guitarist Calvin Pia, bassist Eli Silverman and drummer Alex Beckham. They performed a mixture of songs; some self-penned , along with classick rock numbers like Led Zeppelin's D'yer Mak'er. laying in Lower East Side bars like The Bitter End and the Mercury Lounge, the band developed a small fan base and caught the eye of music producer Joe Vulpis. Soon after arranging time in Vulpis' studio beneath a New Jersey liquor store in the months that followed, SGBand were selling their extended plays Words and Red and Blue at gigs around New York while becoming a local fixture of the downtown Lower East Side club scene.

The Fame (2008)

Gaga's first studio album, The Fame, was released on August 19, 2008. The central theme of this album is her love for fame, being famous, and achieving popularity, presented in different subtopics. Lead-off single Just Dance is just an invitation for dancing and celebrating; Poker Face talks about her own bisexuality and thinking about a woman while having sex. This was inspired by her boyfriend at the time who was into gambling. Lovegame is about fame, love, and sexuality. Paparazzi is about hunger for fame and love. Gaga herself wrote the lyrics and wrote some of the hooks and synth parts of the album, and also played the synths and the piano. Musically, this album is mainly electropop with 80's influences and some R&B beats and some Glam rock thrown in the middle and there's even a track influenced by the legendary rock band Queen, the ballad Brown Eyes. The inspiration behind the track Boys Boys Boys was because of Motley Crue's similarly titled Girls, Girls, Girls. The album reached #1 in several countries around the world and the top 10 in most countries. The Fame was generally positively reviewed by the music critics and this album gets the credit of starting off the Gagamania. The singles spawned from this album were: Just Dance (#1 U.S., #1 U.K., among other countries), the smashing hit Poker Face (#1 U.S., #1 U.K., among other countries), the summery Eh, Eh (Nothing Else to Say) (#15 Australia, #9 New Zealand), the disco stick anthem Lovegame (#5 U.S., #19 U.K.), and Paparazzi (#6 U.S., #4 U.K.). The Fame Monster (2009)

Gaga's second studio album, The Fame Monster was released on November 23, 2009. Originally, her record company wanted Gaga to rerelease The Fame album with 3 bonus tracks, to which she opposed citing the cost of an additional disc as a factor to elevate the price of the album and making it not so affordable for her fans and that "rereleases are unfair". Also, she said that she felt that she had enough material to release another album of new material. The title of the album coincided with the headphones she launched which are called Monster. She explained that this wasn't intentional as she had already written the song Monster in March 2009, before meeting Dr. Dre and Noel Lee, the CEO of Monster Cable Products. The theme of this album is about everything Gaga didn't write about fame in her previous album. This is from a darker point of a view and she connects all of the songs with a monster as a metaphor for different negative sides she found while touring for The Fame Ball Tour. According to Gaga, there's "the fear of alcohol Monster", "the fear of sex Monster", the fear of death Monster", "the fear of love Monster", "the fear of loneliness Monster", etc. This album is more personal as she uses her personal experiences for her songs, such as in the case of Speechless, which she wrote when she found out her father was going to have an open heart surgery and she had talked with him on the phone while touring and before her father went into surgery.
Musically speaking, The Fame Monster follows pretty much the type of music she did on The Fame album but shows progression and evolution in the music. The singles released so far from this album are: Lead-off single monster hit Bad Romance with an already epic and classic video revolving around the Russian mafia, prostitution and vodka (#2 U.S., #1 U.K.). The video for Bad Romance became the most viewed video ever in Youtube. Telephone is the second single with a 9 minute 30 second Jonas Åkerlund directed-video featuring Beyoncé, showing lesbian undertones, jail scenes, food poisoning, Gaga preparing sandwiches and even, Lady Gaga's younger sister. The song made it to #3 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K. And the Ace of Base (the music) and ABBA-influenced (Fernando) Latin-flavored Alejandro was released on February 15 as a download single and so far it's at #50 in the U.S. and #75 in the U.K. The video will be released soon. Many Gaga fans regard this album as being superior than her previous effort. There are two versions of this record. One that is the single disc version with 8 tracks and the other one the 2-CD version, which has The Fame (with bonus tracks) and The Fame Monster. She is currently supporting this album with her grand Monster Ball Tour, which she started last November.
