Jody Watley

Jody Vanessa Watley was born on January 30, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. She is an American, singer, songwriter, record producer, and founder of Avitone Records whose music crosses genres from Pop, R&B, Jazz, Dance and Electronic Soul. In 1987, she won the Grammy Award for "Best New Artist." Along with Janet Jackson and Madonna, she ranks as one of MTV Video Music Awards most nominated female artists ever, with 6 nominations for her ‘Real Love’ video. To date, she is best known for her role in setting trends and standards for style, music and video in the late '80s. Early in her solo career she was also noted for her commercial dance pop stylings with a funky edge. Jody Watley is also noted as being one of the first Pop/R&B singers to include a rapper on the specialized verse/bridge with their collaboration on "Friends" featuring Eric B. & Rakim, which would become a popular formula in commercial Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop. Watley has sold over twenty million albums and singles worldwide. In 2008, she was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard magazine, and was also prominently featured in the historic black issue of Vogue Italia in 2008. Her early music influences are Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Carpenters, Roberta Flack, Prince, Grace Jones and various jazz artists including Nancy Wilson.

The Saturday Night Experience also foreshadowed the fully club-friendly sounds that Watley would embrace on subsequent full-length releases. In 2002, a limited edition version of The Saturday Night Experience, dubbed The Saturday Night Experience EP, was sold exclusively through Watley's own official website. The Makeover (2006; International edition, 2009)

The Makeover is Jody Watley's ninth studio and so far last studio album. It was originally released on August 8, 2006 and it was re-released in 2009 as an international edition with a somewhat altered tracklist. Watley recruited a diverse group of contemporary dance and electronica producers for the project, among them King Britt, 4hero and DJ Spinna. The album's vintage aesthetic, which saw her take the old and remake it as new, was likely foretold in Watley's updating of her signature classic, "Looking for a New Love", in 2005. As per the title, The Makeover contained newly recorded (and remixed) versions of some of Watley's signature classics like "Don't You Want Me" and "Friends" (re-dubbed "Friendz"), as well as new material. Additionally, Watley paid tribute to musical influences like Diana Ross, Chic and Karen Carpenter on the covers "Love Hangover", "I Want Your Love" and a medley of the Carpenters' songs, respectively. The singles released from this album were: Her 1984 Madonna hit cover version Borderline (#2 U.S. Dance charts), I Want Your Love (#1 U.S. Dance charts), and A Beautiful Life (#5 U.S. Dance charts).
